OBITUARY: Jerry Lenard John

Jerry Lenard John, 77, passed away peacefully on Dec. 17, 2012.

He was born on April 25, 1935 to Jared Curtis John, Jr. and Alice B. Merrill John in Solomonville, Ariz., the youngest of six children.

He was an excellent basketball player and his high school won the state championship. Jerry also went on to play for Arizona State University (ASU) before serving a two-year mission in Australia for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). He played lots of basketball on his mission and many of his games were televised.

He married his love, Orlena Clair Maloy, in Mesa, Ariz. in the LDS Temple on March 11, 1960. In 1961, they welcomed their first daughter and in 1962 they moved their family to Blythe to work with his family on the Rancho Del Juan family farm. In Blythe they welcomed two more daughters into the family.

Jerry loved farming the land and was good at it. He was large man standing at 6'4" with big strong hands. He was humble, kind, honest, and an excellent example to all those around him.

He was very active in the LDS Church and held many leadership positions.

In 1993, Jerry and Clair moved to Mesa to be near doctors as Clair's health declined. Jerry laid his sweet wife to rest in June 1996.

His faith kept him strong and he knew one day he would be reunited with Claire and the rest of his family.

Jerry leaves behind one brother, Neil (Julie) John of Blythe; daughters Sherri (Robert) Guy of Red Oak, Texas, Ella Charlene Maloy of Healdsburg, Calif., and Christine (Charlie) DeFreese of Blythe; and 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services for Jerry will be held on Jan. 5, 2013 at 11 a.m. in Apache Junction, Ariz. He will be laid to rest at the Mesa City Cemetery next to his wife.

My condolences to the John family on the passing of Jerry. He was a gentleman in ever sense of the word, and a great competitor on the basketball court. It was my great pleasure to have known him during my years in Blythe. Rest in peace, Jerry.

This is a beautiful message about the passing of your father, Jerry. I attended Scottsdale H.S. with him and was his teammate on that 1953 state championship team. He was a wonderful man and I always admired him. It was a thrill for me to have seen him when we had that 50 year reunion, in 2003, of that remarkable championship. He certainly deserves to rest in peace. His friend....John Poer
