BLYTHE - Palo Verde Community College District welcomed Sheri Jones into the position of interim vice president of Instructional and Student Services on Oct. 15, 2012.

Jones is not a new face to Palo Verde College. She began her tenure four years ago at the school as an instructor of Psychology, Alcohol and Drug Studies. She also served as the chair of the History, Social and Behavioral Sciences Division for three years, as well as serving as vice president of the Academic Senate for two years.

Prior to Palo Verde College, Jones taught in the classroom for nearly 20 years on a wide variety of subjects at the high school and college levels throughout California. She also brings to the position a background in leadership roles, which include serving as director of a multi-million dollar U.S. Department of Education, grant-funded program called GEAR-UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs).

Having already earned a bachelor's degree in social sciences and a single-subject teaching credential from California State University at San Bernardino, and a master's degree in psychology with an emphasis in school psychology from Capella University, Jones is currently finishing her doctoral dissertation entitled "Ethnic Differences in the Relationship Between Self-Esteem and Academic Achievement in Community College Students." Her dissertation is expected to be published later this year.

Jones is a native of California and has made Blythe her home. She is the mother of four and grandmother of two.

She said she looks forward to working with Interim President and Superintendent Denise Whittaker, the Board of Trustees, and especially the students, in making Palo Verde College the go-to place to begin any student's post-secondary career.
