Bicyclist killed in collision with vehicle
Special to the Times

BLYTHE - A bicyclist was killed in a collision with a vehicle around 6:22 p.m. on March 15. Alvin Aguirre, 49, of Blythe, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 2200 block of West Hobsonway.

When officers arrived they found Aguirre being tended to by agents from the US Border Patrol who had happened upon the collision scene shortly after it occurred.

Units from Blythe City Fire and River Medical responded and began treatment of Aguirre, however, they were unable to revive him.

Witnesses reported that Aguirre had been riding his bicycle westbound while towing a small bike trailer. They said Aguirre was weaving within the westbound lane just prior to the collision with a 2012 Nissan Sentra, driven by Ramon Torres, 26, of Blythe.

Torres and two passengers were approaching westbound behind Aguirre and after waiting for an eastbound vehicle to pass, Torres attempted to pass Aguirre. Witnesses reported that Aguirre inexplicably turned to his left and into the path of the passing vehicle, where he was struck.

Torres was evaluated at the scene and showed no signs of alcohol or drug impairment and Torres submitted samples for chemical testing.

One of the passengers in the Nissan received a minor injury from broken glass but neither Torres nor his passengers required medical treatment.

West Hobsonway from West Florence Blvd. to East Florence Blvd. remained closed until midnight while the scene was processed and evidence collected.

This case remains under investigation.
