Jacket golf lose ground in IVL standings

Palo Verde Valley Times

BLYTHE - The Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket golf team lost ground in their quest to displace Brawley at the top of the Imperial Valley League standings in last week's match at Borrego Springs Resort.

In the closest match since the league opener in Brawley, the Wildcats prevailed by six strokes as they carded a score of 414 and the Jackets finished with a 420 total.

Southwest kept their streak of third place finishes alive as they came next at 532 while Holtville came next at 561 and Central was fifth at 580. Imperial failed to field a full team and weren't a factor in the team standings.

Darien Herrera paced the Jacket effort with an 80 and remains in the top three individually with two matches left.

Logan Whiting fashioned an 83 for the Jackets and is currently is positioned fifth individually while "big brother" Jon is in the top ten following his round of 87 at Borrego.

Phillip Thome was good for an 84 and Chad Winkler completed the Jacket scoring with a round of 86.

The Jackets need to win the final two matches that will be played in the Yuma area and will need to make up a 48-shot deficit in the process or have someone else in the league pull an upset and finish ahead of the Wildcats in one of the remaining two league meets.

The fifth IVL meet was held earlier this week at Los Barrancas Golf Course in the Yuma foothills. The final league match is scheduled for Coyote Wash Golf Course in Wellton next week.
