Lady Jackets claim three of five in opening tourney

BLYTHE - The Palo Verde High School Lady Yellow Jacket softball team opened their season this past weekend in Needles at the Colorado River Invitational. After dropping the first two games, the Lady Jackets showed the experience head coach Adam Garcia had hoped to see and won their final three contests of the tournament.

"We looked like beginners the first two games," Garcia said. "The next three games we looked like the team I expected to see on the field."

Palo Verde opened five-inning pool play games against Legacy High School of Las Vegas and scored four runs in their first three at bats to take a 4-1 advantage to the bottom of the fifth inning.

A Legacy home run with two out in the frame knotted the score at 4-4. Another two-run shot an inning later saw the Jackets fall 6-4.

Sammy Waymire and Alex Smith each had two hits and Sarrah Bolding belted a home run to lead the Jacket offense.

Palo Verde never led in their 10-4 loss to Faith Lutheran as Mother Nature added a hail storm to the mix.

With the Jackets trailing 6-4 in the fourth inning, Faith Luthren reopened play after the storm with a bases loaded double that produced three more runs that settled the issue.

Bolding had two more hits including a double and Madonna Gutierrez rapped a home run to pace the Jackets.

Palo Verde was on short end of a 4-0 contest in the following game against Rancho High School of Las Vegas when the Jacket offense got their act together. Palo Verde scored seven times in the bottom of the fourth on seven hits.

Boldings' three-run homer was the highlight of the inning but Alex Jones doubled to open the inning that started a stretch of seven hits in eight batters. Waymire and Jordan Girard added run scoring extra-base hits in the inning as well.

Palo Verde's second win came against White Pine of Ely, Nev., as the Jackets scored five times in the first inning and never trailed as they posted a 9-5 triumph.

The locals led 6-0 in the second when White Pine rallied for five runs to make it close but the Jackets responded with three tallies to put the game away.

Jones scored three times and had three hits including a home run to lead the way for the Jackets. Gutierrez, Bolding, and Britany Smith each enjoyed two-hit games in the win.

In their finale, the Jackets faced Chino Valley and had little trouble in a 13-2 shortened win. Five different Jackets scored twice in the contest while Waymire, Gutierrez and Bolding each had a pair of hits. Five other Jackets each had one hit in the win.

"It was great to see the girls relax and start hitting the ball like we know they can," Garcia said. "They also perked up after the tough start in those first two games. That resilience will serve us well down the road."

The Lady Jackets will hit the road again this next week when they travel to Las Vegas for another tournament.
