BLYTHE - The Palo Verde High School Lady Yellow Jacket softball team saw their season come to a close last Tuesday when they lost to Clairmont in a CIF/San Diego Section Division 4 play-in game. The Lady Chieftains got off to a fast start and claimed a 9-3 win in a game played in San Diego.

"We just weren't sharp at the beginning," said Jacket softball coach Adam Garcia. "We spotted them six runs and that was the difference."

The Chieftains scored four times in the first inning and added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the early 6-0 advantage. None of the runs in the first inning were earned as a pair of fielding miscues helped the Clairmont opening rally to continue while three walks and a single in the second stanza produced two more runs.

Palo Verde got on the board in the third inning when Destiny Rivera walked and Sammy Waymire was hit by a pitch. An Alex Jones single loaded the bases before an infield grounder off the bat of Meche Lainez forced Rivera out at the plate. Waymire then scored the initial Jacket run on a Jordan Girard sacrifice fly.

The Jackets cut the deficit to 6-3 an inning later when Madonna Gutierrez led off the at-bat with a hit and advanced on an infield ground out. With two out, Rivera drew her second walk of the contest and a triple off the bat of Waymire brought the second two Jacket runs home.

Clairmont rallied with three hits and another Jacket error for three runs in their half of the fifth inning to return the margin to six runs.

The Jackets managed to get baserunners in each of their final two at bats but could not answer in the run department as the Chieftains advanced to the double elimination portion of the tournament with the win.

All five of the Imperial Valley League teams admitted to the playoffs were faced with play-in games. Only Imperial and Calexico, the league champion, advanced to double elimination. Imperial defeated Escondido Charter and Calexico upset Fallbrook in their play-in games.

Palo Verde finished the season with a 12-10 record while posting a 5-7 mark in IVL competition.
