COLUMN: Was it for nothing?
Bob Weete
Essay

We are in trouble. Yes, we have been there before. This time, however, it seems different. It is really scary, and I would like to say I am confident that we will make it through this time.

We made it through the Revolutionary War; we made it through the Civil War, World War I and World War II. We made it through the Great Depression. Thousands upon thousands of Americans did not make it through those times, however.

We are currently involved in even more wars and sending our men and women "over there", still hoping for peace throughout the world. I am concerned that maybe these wars "over there" are Satan's distraction from the problems we have right here on our own turf, in the United States of America.

America, from the beginning was a God-fearing nation, though of course some people will choose to see this differently in the only land in the world where we were founded upon the concept that we are free to do so. Yes, there were different interpretations, but we were guaranteed the right to different spiritual beliefs. A freedom clearly denied people in our previous homelands.

The unifying force in the Revolutionary War was to create a new land of freedom, where each individual had the guaranteed opportunity to pursue a life of his choosing. They were guaranteed that through their personal drive, ambition, perseverance and hard work, they could achieve happiness.

We, in the 21st Century, have a hard time realizing just how grateful those early Americans were for those hard-fought opportunities. They were all equally guaranteed those opportunities. They were not guaranteed to be equal in all respects, but they had the opportunity to equal pursuit. It was their responsibility to set their goals. No being "fair" and "equal" in that all would have the things they wanted; they were all promised what they needed in order to live a full life. They only needed to have a roof over their heads, a place to rest their weary bodies, enough food to sustain them, clothing to protect them from the elements.

Self-reliance was the objective, and faith in God was their spirit. This nation grew like a teenager; we shot up with eager anticipation, holding on to the dream granted us by spirited men who worked together to provide for future generations what would have been denied them.

The Civil War came and went and thousands more American bodies were strewn over American soil. It wasn't simply a war to settle a petty difference; it was a war over principle - that all mankind should be free.

Then came WWI and WWII. The American principles came to the fore to defend our noble concepts here as well as assisting our foreign neighbors to achieve those same rights. Sadly, we are still fighting wars to assist our neighbors. That is the American Way; help our neighbors to have those same blessings we have enjoyed. We are a generous nation, a caring nation, and we are proud of our heritage.

Now we are in the most serious and devastating war of our history. We are in a war here, again, in our own country, on our own soil. But "our enemy is us". There clearly are forces within us who choose to strike us down. They choose to hack away at the very core, the heart, of our existence.

Sadly, we have become complacent; we have looked on, in disbelief. "Not in America!" we say. It is quite evident that there are those among us who would toss out our concept of self-reliance and make us subject to a "new world order."

This is a shame and a sham. We have fallen prey to those who desire power rather than peace. We have submitted to their demands for "rights" and have convinced us to turn our backs on all that our forefathers taught us through example. "Responsibility" has been shoved down the list of priorities and the resulting truth is that we are on the road to national suicide. Sounds serious; it is. The faith of a nation with unlimited potential has subtly been eroded. We are no longer a "melting-pot" of all nations, where we can still maintain certain characteristics of our original nations but pledging allegiance to this new nation. We are demanding our "rights" to remain separate and our major strength has been uprooted into weak fragments.

We have millions of immigrants (legal ones) who left their home countries because they did not have American freedoms. And then, the newer immigrants demand that they be allowed to maintain their allegiance to a country they supposedly left behind. Doesn't make much sense to me, at least.

The point is, that as we hack ourselves to pieces by dislodging, one by one, the traditional values of America, we are at the same time destroying the very attraction that has brought us the tired, the poor, longing to be free.

Now, as we acknowledge our annual Memorial Day, please give more than just a simple passing thought about the blood of millions of American lives that has been given throughout the entire world so that we might have what we have today. They deserve so much more.

Today Memorial day is a joke. too many think it's just another paid holiday. a time to drink. They have forgotten the sacrifice these men and women have made for this country and it's people. The way I see things if they are going to water down all of the holidays. By,water down I mean, the meaning of that day. So let stop making all holidays. A paid holiday and have these people work on all of these so call holidays. What happen to Merry Christmas? Also the Christmas tree. Easter. Now it's the time for the college kids to go to Mexico and get drunk. I think you know where I,m going. It's just a waste of time and money for a bunch of ungrateful people. Sorry it's just the way I perceive things now.

The mom and pop's are regulated to death - maybe more than corp's because we don't have the money to buy the government loophole (taxes, pacs) that the corps do. Bottom line - keep on taxing and regulating the business to death and see how many jobs are created or LOST. Oh yea we've lost millions of jobs - can u say regulated and taxed to death? The training in texas would not have prevented the explosion - just like the training didn't prevent the Mass Bomber - u will have catastrophes and u need to deal with them - we do NOT need government to hold business owner's hands - they got where they are WITHOUT government - matter of fact - business is going bust and closing because they can't make a PROFIT - what do you think drives business? If you all created and built your own business and employed people, you may see it differently - but if you have not stood in the shoes of a business owner, corp or mom/pop - u have no idea what you are talking about. Try it sometime - create a business, employ several people, THEN AND ONLY THEN WILL YOU SEE WHAT THE GOVERNMENT IS REALLY DOING. There is no need for at least 1/2 of all the taxes, regulations, inspections, that are mandated on business. The other half of this crap is used to feed illegals, inmates, welfare takers, keep a government employees' kid, nephew and neice employed, ETC. ETC. ETC. There are many fine states who are doing it right and 1 very well known state who doesn't have a clue - that would be Calif. The dem's pollute everything including the air and water - u don't notice because u can't see beyond your own nose!!

The corporations you re beating on made the PC you used to type your messabe, the toilet bowl you sat on this morning, the cereal, eggs, toast you ate. The fridge, AC, auto etc etc etc.Remember, Republicans drink water and breathe air. What do you use to power your car? A donkey dropping dung in front of you as you ride your wagon to work or to get groceries. Thje paved rods you drive on are made from OIL and gravel.

What utopia you know of that you want America to be. Obama's utopia where it's alright for the New black panthers to intimidate voter an the AG of the USA give them a pass because they're black.

Or are you waiting for Obama's "hope ans change?" Hope for and change to what.

Most people whether they know it or not, work for Corporations or subsidiaries of corporatrions.

Sounds like Conservative Texas wants to blame the Feds for the loss of life to their first responders at the fertilizer plant that exploded. They feel the federal law that required the plant to notify the emergency agencies did not go far enough. It should of required training also. Goes to show low tax states that do not have the funds to train that when at fault blame someone else.
Funny right, the conservatives want no regulations and low taxes but are unable to face the consequences, they have to blame someone else!!!
THINK ABOUT IT!

For all the generations past know it was for nothing. At the very least your efforts and sacrifice gave opportunity to future generations. It will be up to those future generations to take advantage of it and build upon it. For that we are thankful and will remember.

You find it hard to believe that without the environmentalist you would have lost your FREEDOM to drink clean water, BREATHE clean air.
Do you really think Corporations would spend to keep water clean and air clean if they did not have to. You know the bottom line MONEY!

Article comment by: It's just the beginning Of the END

In the next century we will face the greatest challenges to our country if not humanity than the world has ever seen. So far there doesn't seem to be much hope. We are divided and corrupted by greed, power, and misinformation of all sorts. Our leadership is lacking regardless of political party or religious affiliation. We choose not to believe science or only that science that serves us now. We choose to look away rather than to get educated see all points of view and try to make a difference. We believe the false testimony of the media that no longer reports truth but rather what is profitable or beneficial to only their cause. . We believe the constant finger pointing and accusations blaming the world ills on the actions of someone else or some other group. So yeah it could have all been for nothing. Unless, we choose something else than the status quo. I just don't see how that is possible with the current state of things. Perhaps we will have to wait for the next "Pearl Harbor" type of event before the change we need becomes possible. Of course by then it may be too late.

Your thoughts are misdirected. It is Corporations that are taking your freedoms!
You got some of your Lawsuit reforms this year. Can not sue any corporation if you are damaged by GMO's thanks to a Missouri Republican!
Now they are trying to pass a law forbidding states from passing laws that require telling you what is in your FOOD!
Believe me it goes on and on ALL SUPPORTED by CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICIANS!!!
