Bankruptcies haunt Healthcare District board incumbents

Marty Bachman

BLYTHE -Two current Healthcare District Board members filed bankruptcy prior to serving on the board, records show. The pair oversee Palo Verde Hospital's multi-million dollar budget among other duties.

Sandra Hudson, aka Sandra Starkman, who was elected to a two-year seat in 2008 and faces re-election on Nov. 2, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in June of 1999, citing between $100,000 and $500,000 in debts and zero assets.

Beverly Mays, who was appointed to the board last summer by Riverside County Supervisor John J. Benoit, also filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in March 2009 over debts between $100,000 and $500,000. Mays claimed to have less than $50,000 in assets at the time of her filing.

Hudson racked up $46,000 in credit card debt and had a $12,384 judgment filed against her. She owed $53,650 in services she received, which included $38,901 due a local Blythe man.

She defaulted on a personal loan of $41,250 to Redstone Holdings and $6,700 due a Brawley company for hay and other services. Other debts include $437 to Nationwide Credit for fuel, $91 to Sprint, $270 to AT&T and $697 to Gottschalks. Hudson owed 21 different agencies a total of more than $161,000 in debts.

The case was discharged in October 1999 but re-opened in March of 2002, when Hudson filed a motion to avoid a judgment lien on her residence that had been filed by Valley Independent Bank against her property on Seville Lane in Blythe. The case was then closed for the second time in June 2002.

Mays, Blythe's former vice-mayor prior to be being voted off the city council in November 2008, owed $165,514 on her primary residence, $11,044 on a 2005 Chrysler 300 car loan, $70,199 on a rental property, and $23,065 on a vehicle loan for a 2007 Chevy Silverado pickup truck.

Her unsecured debts included $753 owed to the county of Los Angeles for moving vehicle violations, $305 for a traffic ticket issued by Riverside County Sheriff's, a $699 child support overpayment received, a $1,359 overpayment received from Social Security, a $283 fee for a returned vehicle registration fee, and almost $4,000 owed to the IRS for the year 2006.

Mays owed almost $10,000 to local business including $774 to Palo Verde Hospital, which billed her for medical services. Other locals left on the hook were Halby's Store for Men, Linda Faulkner Dance School, CB Plumbing, Alex's Tire's, Dr. David Choi, Dr. Timothy Port, and Glenn Johnson Cooling and Heating.

Altogether Mays owed money to 81 different agencies and individuals totaling close to $500,000 in debts, and listed a monthly income of $2,873.

You get what you vote for. Now there you have it. Most of you people have made your bed now sleep with the person you voted for.

If you now have changed your minds maybe next time you will vote for the right person.

To be honest are there anymore honest people here in Blythe? Someone without an agenda,or a puppet for another group?

There should be rules set in place here in Blythe, for any voted for office placement. Where you can only be voted twice and then must wait for 10 years to run for that office again. Also you can only serve in one Board at any one time. That should cut down on the power grab a little.

If you can't handle your personal checkbook, why should we trust you with the hospital checkbook?

She never said she had Ten Million in the bank. The hospital had ten million according to the same CFO that is their now that says they have a little over 5 million. If you want to debate the hopsital lets do it but not attack peoples character again. Get a life! Wow the carney campaign must be taking a page from Obama. Attack people cause you have nothing good to run on.

The problem is not just with people who run up huge debt and then file bankrupture! What I have to wonder about is how the hell someone who makes less than 3K a month can even get half-a-mil in debt?? You'd think at some point long before that a creditor might have noticed. Either that or a person has to intentionally hide debt when seeking new credit. Usually there's a disclosure mandate in those contracts that declares "under penalty of perjury" right close to where one signs. Still, if somebody wanted to give me a bunch of stuff based on my word I'd pay them, I'd take it too. Of course, I'm a bum with no actual material goods to forfeit and I'm old so I give a crap about my credit rating. I know I should feel bad about that, but whenever I start to I just think about the fact that no matter how "cool" or "successful" one is, we are all equal in three places. In the womb, in the grave......and on the crapper!!

Article comment by: To: How Stupid Can We Get BLYTHIAN 63

This is my third posting, and may be selectively set aside again

Really stupid if you fall for Mrty. PVVT did not contact these candidates for response, did not report these bankruptcies at previous elections (because he thought his friends running for election in the past did not need his help, but Quitty and Mclain need a lot of help now), and now sees it fit to release a publicly know bankruptcy when the hospital FINANCIAL report is GRAET????

The hospital was almost broke two years ago under direction of PVVT friends like Derek Copple who had (deleted) and was running for re-election but was soundly defeated, however PVVT never bothered to report that. The finances were not important then?

SANDY's HARD WORKE RESULTED IN 10 MILLION DOLLARS IN THE HOSPITAL BANK ACCOUNT, AND A LOT OF NEW EQUIPMENT FOR PATIENTS. We vote for SANDY HUDSON for what she has done for the hospital. Bankruptcy years ago, her fault or not, wonít change that.

We will vote for HUDSON for her track record and performance in the last two years. You need to report on your own friendsí finances and criminal records that have no Board record to run on.
