COLUMN: Not 'Correct'
Bob Weete

There is absolutely nothing I can say that will "please" everybody. I've known that from the beginning. Frankly, I do not intentionally try to please. I try to share an opinion for discussion. If I really tried to please everyone, I would really go off the deep end. Too many individual opinions.

That is one of the things that used to distinguish America from literally every other country in the world. Our founding fathers set it up deliberately that way. And, I say again, much to the chagrin of the anonymouses (or is it anonymii?), our ancestors also held tight to the notion that God's love would permeate this country and would also cause people to use some discretion when disagreeing.

This is long gone, I know. We used to have freedom of speech; gone. We used to have freedom of religion; gone. We used to have freedom of press; gone. We used to have freedom of assembly; gone. Well, that depends on who you are and your connections.

Oh, yes, we are free in the sense that we can think what we want, and we can say what we want, if we express it inside of our own minds, or inside our own group. We can expect that those who don't see it the same way as we do may express themselves, too. Vociferously.

However, it has been my experience in my weekly expression of my personal opinion that it is merely open season for not exactly discussing or debating positions, but simply out-and-out personal attack. I taught school for 41 1/2 years, so I am relatively tough. At first, the vehemence did, indeed, hurt my feelings, but it does not really bother me, personally, anymore.

The teacher that still lives in me, however, is very sad for these people who spend their time reading my columns and then feel compelled to condemn me and my opinion. I am merely writing my opinion; I am not writing a thesis, and footnotes are not required. It's sad that they have not learned that if they want to attempt to change my position, then it might be prudent for them to counteract my statements by giving "facts" or "opinions" of their own to justify their own positions on the topic at hand.

Surprisingly, I have been very pleased to frequently run into people who take the time to let me know they read and agree with me. In some cases, they have been people I don't know. Thank God for them, or I might be inclined to be depressed.

So, the upshot is that there might be more people who would feel free to express themselves openly, were it not for the self-appointed judges who determine what is a politically correct view. Of course, any statement that doesn't follow the party line is therefore, written by a demented old man.

No wonder I get nostalgic for the olden days before respect and responsibility went out of style.

Every time I freely express my spiritual beliefs in this free country, I am also taken to task, in an attempt to get me to shut up about that. If you are a non-believer, that is your business, but if we do really have freedom of speech/press, then why do you feel it is your right to denigrate me or others for expressing spirituality ourselves? What is the harm? Just that it "offends" you? Gosh, I'm sorry. But your constant persecution of people whose beliefs are shared "offend" us, too. Why don't we live and let live? Oh, yeah, the rule of political correctness trumps American ideals. Dang! I just never will get that right.

I just don't get it. These self-styled critics rail at me because they say I need to quit watching Fox News. How do they know I watch Fox News, unless they, themselves, watch a lot of Fox News in order to know my TV habits?

I used to watch CNN. Yes, I did. But you know what? I found I didn't care for their reporting, so I stopped watching CNN. I don't punish myself by watching something I don't want to watch. Seems sensible to me. So I wonder why these people watch so much Fox News if they don't like what they have to say. And, I also don't understand why they bother reading my columns if they clearly don't like what I say.

And the references made to my age are really devastating to me. Oh, I cry each time they say those hurtful things. Reminds me of my own childhood, when kids called other kids names. We used to say, "Sticks and stones" You know. I still follow that solution.

Another sad part of it is that some of these people actually sound like they may even be fairly intelligent, but they have simply let their emotions control them. "Just do it" and "Just say it" has taken the place of so many practices of the "olden days". The freedoms were actually free - up to the point where practicing our own freedoms denied the expression of freedom on the part of someone else.

Political correctness, along with hatred, ought to go the way of the crank wringer on a washing machine and let relative peace return.

@crazy t. when have i ever said hateful things to you? i'm just mad about females that want tax dollars to use for abortions after they have had fun going out and partying. they have money for a fun time and partying . but they have no money for the pill. what i wrote about the teacher and the girl was in the news. i did not make it up. so do not make up hateful things just because you can not defend obama. obama said that he wanted the gas prices so high. so to make the people stop driving. he also said that when the prices went up he would give gas vouchers. so i'm still waiting for my vouchers. i heard and saw him say this in a tv interview.

and what do you mix in with your crystal light? and you, with your liberal leanings, are a kettle calling the pot black, you know. how about you providing some "facts" to defend your "savior"? don't quote any of his statements, though. we want facts. he is a pathological liar, a major part of his illness - narcissism. he can't help himself. when congress doesn't do his bidding? he personally takes the liberty of avoiding the law of the land - the constitution - and scribbles out another executive order. swearing on the bible means absolutely nothing to this guy. he is "transforming" this country in order to castrate it to be submissive to islam and some of their perverted practices that does not include loving and respecting one another. liberals love to hate but they don't acknowledge it. they call anyone who disagrees with them the haters. get real. wake up, man! he may have finaggled himself into a nobel prize, but he'll never make it as a saint. he doesn't care one whit about this country, its people (except his billionaire cronies) the poor, the middle class, wallstreet denizens. now, i do imagine he admires karl marx, jeremiah wright, and the likes of those who foster a total destruction of the one bright hope of this world.

@El P & Walt~I don't drink Kool Aid, it's bad for you. I can afford Crystal Light thanks to MY President. You guys can spew all the hate you want, it will not deter me from my beliefs. Beliefs that are supported by MATH. There is NO Way Romneys 5 T in tax cuts will do anything but drive our economy into the dirt, AGAIN. History is on my side and it tells us that trickle down doesn't work, Obamas plan does. We need to invest our money in the American people, Not China. SIASD

Why all the hate and subtle putdowns? That's all you have apparantly. NONE of you that have thrown shade on my posts have anything to say that makes your points valid. If you have something, bring it. And I'm not talking stupid crap, like, well, he's a muslim.

Sittin on the dock of the bay.

@Crazy T. Did you read where a teacher harassed a High School Student for wearing a Romney and Ryan Tee Shirt? It happen in Philadelphia. Do you want 4 more years of this? I guess only the Liberals have the only rights to Free Speech. Others are second class Citizens. This is what Obama stands for. 4 more years of drinking more Kool Aid. You know what happen when The Reverend Jones gave his people the Kool Aid to drink, Right?

And you actually believe that mankind is going to do it all by itself? What a joke! Since mankind has chosen to exalt himself he might be aware that he himself is the actual cause of this mess in the first place. When our faith was stronger and more prevalent, we were doing well. When we decided we didn't want any kind of restrictions in our lives and started living for ourselves, that is when all hell broke loose. It is certainly "easier" to avoid The Way, in the sense that it absolves us for any responsibility for participating in God's Way, but it is ultimately not satisfactory because in order for us to all have things our way, there is always someone else who is going to lose out and have a miserable life. When we love one another, we can actually achieve greater happiness. Reason it out.

Crazy Town, continue to drink the Kool Aid and think pretty thoughts. 114,000 jobs were NOT added in September. Those numbers were dropped from the amount of unemployment claims filed or paid that month. That's how the Gov't determines unemployment rate - not by counting paychecks received but by the number of unemployment claims filed. So basically, what this is telling us is that we have 114,000 folks who are still unemployed - but now, their benefits have expired. Just 114K still looking for work and food with no aid in sight.

Well, look at it this way Bob! Soon the election will be over and no matter who wins you'll have awhole new crop of stuff to gripe about! Here's a little tip for you though. All those problems we have? "God" is not gonna fix them for us! Even if he DID exist, which he doesn't except in the minds of the superstitious and fearful, it is obvious he could give a rats one less what happens here anymore! It's time to put that Fairy Tale away with Brer Rabbit and Uncle Toms Cabin!

Unemployment down to 7.8%.

114,000 jobs added in September in spite of conservative obstructionism.

Imagine how good we WOULD be doing if congress had approved the Presidents jobs bill.

No need to use hyperbole to make your points, Mr. Weete. Freedom of speech is alive and well. Your columns in the PVVT every other week and the comments they engender prove that all the time. Freedom of the press, gone. Really? Where does your column and related comments regularly appear? Freedom of religion and assembly gone. Tell that to the millions of Americans and citizens of Blythe as they gather in their religious houses, community buildings and private homes to conduct the business of worship, local government and private celebration. Many times your views are plausible. It is when you plunge into extreme comments like the ones previously mentioned that can turn readers off. There are many things that are askew in this country on the liberal and conservative landscape, but I have never felt that any of my rights and freedoms are gone. Cut the drama, doom and gloom and whining about the country in which you grew up. We still have all our freedoms to exercise as we please.

Why do you people keep getting your thongs in a bunch. When you are watching a movie that you do not like you change the channel. Right? or do you just sit with your mouth open and complain about the movie. If you people do not like the Fox News you watch another News outlet. Right? Or do just sit and complain about Fox News. The same with Weete's Column. Why in the world would you read it, if you hate it. Why? Why would you put yourself Thur all of the misery, you claim it cause's you. You want to know why? Because you have nothing better in your life to do. But Whine. Write your own Column stating your opinions and why you believe that your opinion is the right one. Or just write your opinions and let people think what they want.

Article comment by: JUST SAY WHO YOU ARE

My biggest beef with you is that you do not say who are. You are a conservative with strong traditional values. There is nothing wrong with that. You feel offended that someone might presume that you watch Fox News....but you do watch it. Reading some columns (I will admit that I do not fully read them, same theme, same story) you state that you are unbiased and fair to both sides but in fact you are not (i.e. birther comments). You spend a lot of time defending your views, own up to them. I am not conservative, I am an independent voter. I vote democratic 3 out of 4 times. I love Bill 0'Reilly, hate Rush Limbaugh. I do watch CNN more than Fox. That is who I am. I believe you would me more respected if you came out of the closet with your conservative, fundamentalist views. Be true to yourself. This is America, you can be anything you want to be.

Mr. Weete, I'm not being sarcastic here. I'm honestly befuddled at this paragraph:

"We used to have freedom of speech gone. We used to have freedom of religion gone. We used to have freedom of press gone. We used to have freedom of assembly gone."

How is any of that remotely true? What things are you not able to do anymore that you used to be able to do? All of those rights are fully intact in my day to day life.

Freedom? What kind of freedom allows the minority to dictate what the majority can do? Like saying the Pledge of Allegiance or a prayer in school? Just because one student doesn't want to say the Pledge of Allegiance or a prayer in school (and is not being forced to do it) the remaining students are forbidden from doing so. Just because you are offended by someone's actions should not give you the right to restrict or prohibit someone else's actions.
